XRP Tokenomics: Supply, Escrow Releases and Fee Burning

Crypto coins scattered over a printed volume chart

TL;DR

XRP began with 100 billion coins; mining does not create additional units under the current protocol, and transaction costs burn small amounts. An escrow release makes coins available but does not prove they were sold. Compare total supply, circulating supply and holdings before drawing conclusions about market supply.

Separate the Supply Figures before Comparing Them

Different supply numbers answer different questions. Comparing them without checking definitions can make an ordinary accounting difference look like a sudden change in issuance.

FigureWhat to checkCommon mistake
Original supplyCoins created at launchTreating it as today's circulating amount
Existing total supplyOriginal amount less destroyed transaction costsAssuming fee burning creates a new token issuance schedule
Circulating supplyThe data provider's definition and timestampTreating every existing coin as freely trading
Escrow balanceOn-chain locks and release conditionsCounting the same coins as both locked and newly available
Exchange liquidityTradable balances and order-book depthAssuming circulating supply can all be bought at the displayed price

The current balances below share an observation time. Compare circulating supply with its definition, and distinguish all XRP held in escrow from an estimate of coins available to trade.

Current XRP Supply and Escrow Balances

Read the current total, circulating estimate, escrow balance and cumulative fee burn together. The update time matters because releases, re-escrow and transactions change these quantities.

Definitions: circulating supply is CoinGecko's estimate of coins available outside locked or company-held balances. Total supply and the escrow balance come from the XRP Ledger distribution snapshot published by data.ripple.com (snapshot of Oct 18, 2026); destroyed fees equal the original 100 billion minus the existing total.

The escrow figure measures XRP still held in unfinished on-chain escrows. It should not be added to circulating supply unless the data provider's definition excludes it; doing so without checking can count the same coins twice.

For a supply reconciliation, original supply minus cumulative fee burn gives existing total supply. Circulating supply is a classification within that total, not an additional pool of coins.

Follow an Escrow Release through Its Possible Outcomes

Escrow places funds under conditions that determine when they can be released. Release makes the relevant coins available to their recipient; a later action determines whether they move elsewhere, remain held or enter another escrow.

Ripple's original arrangement placed 55 billion XRP in escrows scheduled to make up to 1 billion available per month. Unused amounts could be placed into later escrows, extending the schedule; that original commitment is not the current locked balance or a promise that the monthly maximum is sold.

Release Is an Availability Event

A ledger record can show that an escrow finished and funds reached an account. That proves the movement described by the transaction, not the recipient's future trading intention.

Read the amount, recipient and transaction type together. A large number in a headline is insufficient to establish whether it refers to a scheduled maximum, an actual release or a net change after other movements.

Re-Escrow Changes the Net Amount Left Available

Consider an illustrative period in which 1 billion coins leave escrow and 700 million are placed into new escrows. The difference is 300 million before considering other transfers and balances.

That arithmetic does not mean 300 million were sold. The remaining amount may be held, allocated or transferred under arrangements that are not established by the escrow record alone.

A Transfer Is Not Necessarily an Exchange Sale

Moving funds between two accounts changes location, not total supply. Even a transfer to an address associated with an exchange does not reveal the trade, execution price or final beneficial owner by itself.

For the basic relationship between company holdings and the public network, use the distinction between Ripple, XRP and XRPL. It prevents a company treasury movement from being mistaken for protocol issuance.

Understand What Fee Burning Can and Cannot Do

The ledger destroys the transaction cost rather than paying it to validators. This reduces existing supply, but the direction of that effect does not establish its economic size.

For an illustrative calculation, suppose 1 million transactions each destroyed 0.00001 XRP. The total removed would be 10 coins; actual destruction depends on the transactions and fees applied.

That example shows why transaction count alone cannot justify a dramatic scarcity claim. You need the total amount destroyed and its size relative to supply, alongside demand and liquidity.

The explanation of XRP fees and reserves separates the destroyed cost from coins retained to meet an account reserve. A reserve is not automatically burned or paid to another participant.

Check Holdings without Double Counting

Large addresses can belong to exchanges, custodians, companies or arrangements serving many users. An address ranking therefore describes account balances, not a reliable list of the richest individual people.

To assess a supply claim, work through the evidence in order:

  1. Record the source and the time of its snapshot.
  2. Identify whether the number is total, circulating, escrowed or held by named accounts.
  3. Separate movements within the same identified group from movements outside it.
  4. Check whether labels are verified or inferred.
  5. Explain what the records cannot establish, including private sale terms and beneficial ownership.

If circulating supply rises while the displayed price stays constant, the calculated market capitalization rises too. That is an arithmetic result, not proof that an equal amount of new money entered the market.

Use Supply Data for a Decision, Not a Price Promise

Supply analysis is useful when it identifies what could change and how large that change might be. It becomes misleading when a release calendar or burn figure is presented as a complete forecast.

Someone planning to sell XRP for USDT should also consider the actual exchange quote, available liquidity and receiving network. None of those conditions can be inferred from an escrow headline.

FAQ

Should lost coins be subtracted from reported supply?

An inactive address does not prove that its signing credentials have been lost. Do not subtract assumed lost holdings from a provider's supply figure without a stated, defensible methodology.

Can the owner release a time-locked escrow early?

The ledger will not finish a time-locked escrow before its specified release condition is met. The owner's ability to move other unlocked holdings does not remove that on-chain restriction.
